The Zephyrian have refused contact with most Earth fauna. Mammals are too loud, fish ignore them, primates are politely confusing. The exception is the ant.
Council bioscientists explain it this way: ant colonies operate on distributed intelligence, no central brain, no individual self. So do the Zephyrian. To a 4.2 billion year old organism that long ago abandoned the idea of a single mind, an ant colony is the only thing on this planet that looks like home.
There is also the gravity. Ants navigate Earth's gravitational field with a precision that approaches detection of cosmic resonance, almost an order of magnitude finer than human equipment. The Zephyrian believe this is not a coincidence: they suspect ants are reading the same singularity-thread the Zephyrian draw from. Half-truth, half-poetry. Either way, the species recognise each other.
